Download, read, and hear each story narrated in both American Virgin Island Creole and Standard English, plus find out how these stories survived in tact from the original storyteller. The Virgin Islands Dutch Creole folktale below was collected by a Dutch anthropologist, J. P. B. de Josselin de Jong, who visited the Virgin Islands in 1923. De Josselin de Jong does not say who told him this story. However, we do know that all of the people who told him stories lived on St. Thomas and St. John and that they spoke both Dutch Creole and Virgin Islands English.

We taught them in our classrooms. Sue Snyder, Margaret duGard, Renee Boyer-White and Ivy Rawlins were on the authorship team. The materials include songs, listenings, dances, instrumental pieces, poetry from African and African-American sources, and they are all meet the standards of authenticity and age appropriateness. There are lessons which teach musical concepts and skills, and there are program ideas. There are musicals as well, and lessons based on African proverbs and stories. African and African-American musicians are interviewed.

EarthLink member Karen Ellis founded the Educational CyberPlayGround to provide a community for intuitive learners, adult learners, and educators working with students on the Web and in classrooms. Using her experiences teaching movement, dance, and elementary education to young people in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Ellis set up a learning site that celebrates diversity in students' backgrounds while highlighting the variety in students' preferred approaches to learning. When you access her award-winning site, you can choose the map that matches your learning style (intuitive, logical, or visual) by clicking on the "search this site" pull-down menu. Explore playful educational approaches to music, arts, literacy, and technology. Then sign up for her high-quality, low-volume mailing list: Diversity University Collaboratory, an exciting community of students of all ages and teachers who share ideas about how you can learn without leaving your cultural identity behind.
