Course Preparation Means Great Workload Increase for Faculty Without Increased Salaries

Faculty at colleges and universities are participating in the creation of distance online web based courses and in many cases are not receiving additional pay or compensating workload reductions elsewhere for their efforts. There are a large number of additional responsibilities in this field of online instruction such as creation of a complete curriculum in text format as opposed to verbally as classes need to be delivered either as a text document or verbally in a webcast and must be clean precise presentations compared to those given in traditional classrooms. Student conferences are handled in writing via email rather than in an in person office meeting. These are two examples of the increased work efforts that are required for the provision of quality distance online education courses.
