PHILADELPHIA -- Internet innovator Karen Ellis is one of more than 4.2 million members of EarthLink, the nation's second largest Internet service provider, and this month her fellow members will have the opportunity to learn more about her.

Ellis, founder of the Educational CyberPlayGround, an Internet education portal, and Diversity University Collaboratory, an electronic mailing list that deals with educational issues among a broad range of topics, is currently profiled on the cover of the August-September issue of bLink, EarthLink's bimonthly membership magazine article "Thinking Outside The Box"

The profile describes Ellis as using "her experiences teaching movement, dance, and elementary education to young people in the U.S. Virgin Islands" to create the Educational CyberPlayGround,
http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/, as "a learning site that celebrates diversity in students' background while highlighting the variety in students' preferred approaches to learning."

Ellis said she appreciates the attention that the bLink profile will bring to her efforts to acquaint newcomers to the Web with the educational and cultural resources available on the Internet.

"I consider this an honor," she said, "and I hope that I will have the opportunity to communicate about our efforts with many of the EarthLink members."

EarthLink, headquartered in Atlanta, recently acquired OneMain.com of Reston, Va., with more than 762,000 subscribers.

EarthLink officials said they hoped the acquisition would expand the ISP's presence from major cities to rural communities and smaller cities where OneMain.com has focused its operations.

Ellis said the bLink profile is the lastest national recognition that the Educational CyberPlayGround last received.

The New York Times Learning Network in May selected the Educational CyberPlayGround as its "Site of the Day."

The Times noted that the site provides opportunities for parents, teachers, and librarians, even with limited online experience, to learn how to use the World Wide Web to provide more effective teaching.

"The site offers well-organized links in the areas of curriculum, arts, the Internet, linguistics, music, teachers, literacy and technology," the Times stated.

USA Today in January 2000 selected the Educational CyberPlayGround as one of its "Best Bets for Educators." The Educational CyberPlayGround last year also was a USA Today "Hot Site," in both its online and print editions, and MSNBC News online last year named the portal as a "Web Pick." The portal currently also has a permanent link with the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"We know that the Internet sometimes can be overwhelming," Ellis said, "and we want to help those with limited Web experience, particularly those involved with education, to master Web tools and skills."

Those with experience on the Web also will find useful resources, she said. The site includes an educational vendor directory to aid users in locating goods and access to "Ring Leaders," experts in their fields who will assist site users.

Educational CyberPlayGround Gains Recognition from New York Times

PHILADELPHIA -- A locally based Internet education portal, the Educational CyberPlayGround, is continuing to receive national recognition with
selection May 11 as the New York Times Learning Network's "Site of the Day."

Selection as a Times' "Site of the Day" follows similar recognition from USA Today and MSNBC in 1999. The Educational CyberPlayGround currently also has a permanent link with the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Karen Ellis, who developed the portal launched in September 1999, said the Educational CyberPlayGround receives approximately 4,000 page views each day.

Ellis said the success of the site is the result, in part, of the organization of the portal that has "ring leaders," experts in their fields, who provide both content and interactive guidance for portal
users.

The site provides access to those who have no experience on the Internet and a variety of teaching resources for those who do, she said.

The Educational CyberPlayGround is available at

The Educational CyberPlayGround

Despite all the resources and opportunities for education that the Internet can provide, cyberspace can be a confusing place for new learners, parents, educators, and particularly teachers who have little experience on the rapidly growing World Wide Web.

What does a person do when a simple search can bring thousands of sites to evaluate?

The main purpose of the Educational CyberPlayGround is to help all teachers, teachers, parents, librarians, home schoolers and regular folks, even those with little or no online experience, to use the Internet effectively to aid teaching. In The Education Vendor Directory you'lll find an outstanding easy to use resource that will help you locate the very tool you needed and wanted.

July 2000 Mason Integrated Technologies Ltd (MIT2)
Strategic Alliance formed with Educational CyberPlayGround a Web-based source of online curriculum and information materials. We trust that this partnership will further promote the study and use of vernacular, and local languages, and other dialects, as well as the development and implementation of computer systems and applications for such purposes.
