Funk Brother Bob Babbitt's
TO ALL THE CHILDREN,
As you grow older and learn about living, you should know that the following list contains the main elements that you need to walk the fields, hills, mountains and cross the streams of life's path. The Funk Brothers were nominated for Grammy's, and looking back at my life, I can say these are the very attributes that brought all of us success.
Commitment to hard work
NEVER SAY "I CAN'T"
No matter what you decide to do in your life always stay in a positive mode. For me music was one of the great ways to keep my mind occupied. During those years I was lucky to have my music teacher get me involved in my high school band, where I spent most of my time.
KEEP OUT OF THE "STREETS"
Please avoid the negative life of the streets, it is not the way to go. Crime, drugs, no education, High School dropouts, people who are lost and can't find their way, they welcome you to be one of them. I've watched many people make mistakes and I know you need to stay in High School and graduate.
GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL
There are some jobs that you can not even get without a college diploma let alone without a High School Diploma, so do yourself a favor, and please stay in school until you graduate! When I decided to make music my career, my own High School Diploma enabled me to apply and get accepted to a music school Detroit Institute Of Arts
My Major: Harmony & Theory - Bass. I always needed to study hard and I would practice, practice, practice.
EDUCATION IS NEVER WASTED
It really doesn't matter which career you choose, but you must try to commit yourself and focus 100% on whatever you do. If you start out thinking that you want a career in music or the arts and then at some point, decide to change your mind, don't worry, you did not waste your time. The skills you developed while you studied, combined with all your hard work will always be useful to you and will help you to succeed in whatever becomes your career.
For example, when I was first introduced to music it was classical, because that was what my parents thought I should learn. I feel that learning to read music was the one thing that learning classical music did for me, even though I did not end up playing classical music. Just learning that skill ended up to be very important to me as far as my having success in the music business.
THE MUSIC BUSINESS
As a result of my dedication to music I became involved with some of the great musicians in the music business!!!! Everybody is using computers now for email, writing books, and composing. It is important to learn the technology, I use email all the time. You are able to read my message because you can use a computer. These skills are necessary in every business now.
Even though the journey can be up and down, I think that early in your life when you are learning and studying, along with having a positive vision, you need to lift and motivate yourself, never give up, and always try to be optimistic. When you can bring yourself up from the down, that will be your measure of real success!
GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT
Once you decide the career path that you want to take don't look back, go straight ahead, and GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT......
